Some people felt pleasure when they hurt things, but Kaspar only felt numb. Blood dripped from the gaping wound that stretched from the gator's tail to its chest as it fell back to the ground and scrabbled weakly to its feet. Kaspar felt nothing. No joy, no sadness. No pleasure in dispatching - or almost dispatching - the beast. It was just as much a pawn in the Gamemaker's game as he. More so, it had been bred solely for this purpose. To die at his hands. He felt more kinship for this twisted being than the human Gamemakers.

The gator was having no such thoughts and stirred itself weakly for what must surely be its final attack. The axes twitched but before he could raise them to so much as a halfhearted swipe, Rhea was diving in and stabbing it. The knife dangling from its chest, the gator staggered to its feet and snapped at his foot. Before its teeth even got close a second tribute, Heppa, was flinging herself at it. The gator slid a few feet before coming to a rest, the knife still sticking vertically from its chest. It was clear that it was dead. The most obvious sign was that it was no longer breathing, but the fact that there was a ridiculously large pool of blood around it was a telling clue.

Kas loped over to the carcass, extracting Rhea's knife from it. He wiped the blood off on his wetsuit, leaving a dark brown smear to match all the other dark brown smears he'd already picked up in various ways. "Here." Kas offered the knife to her handle first. "Thanks for finishing it off. You too Heppa." He gave them both a small smile but there was a wariness in his eyes when he looked to Heppa. Rhea was the only person in these Games that he could really trust. Heppa might have helped him now, but that was only because she thought it would help her. He didn't kid himself that she felt any kind of attachment to him.

It was then that he noticed the spear. His spear now. Rhea had her sword and Kas finally had his spear. He had never been so glad to see an inanimate object before. The shaft, the head, the edge... Everything about it was perfect. With a spear in hand, Kas was no longer a tribute. He was a killer. Almost reverentially Kas lifted the weapon from the ground, running one hand over the dark wood. He'd often wanted to just hold Rhea's spear when they were in the cave together and now he could hold it as long as he wanted. He might not even put it down.

He didn't have enough room in his sack for three weapons so it was with some regret that he laid down one of his axes. They felt like old friends and abandoning one was almost a betrayal. But he was getting a spear in exchange and that more than made up for it.

Kas moved to stand beside Rhea, spear ready. "So who are we attacking? Anyone? Or do you have alliances I should know about," he asked in a low voice. Rhea was the first tribute he'd come across since splitting at the clay pit. He had no idea what was happening with the alliances. Chances were, Rhea wouldn't know either. She'd spent the last few days in a cave with him after all. But she'd been part of an alliance before and maybe she had some idea of who they should be keeping on their good side. He didn't want to attack anyone only to find out they were actually an ally.

Rhea was talking about alliances but Kas had frozen as he watched Heppa being killed. She fell to the ground and it was like watching the mutt die once again, but a thousand times worse. This wasn't just some nameless animal that had to be killed if he was going to survive. This was Heppa who's last act was stopping the mutt attacking him. He might not have known her well, might not have trusted her, but Heppa's death brought him no pleasure.

A cold feeling sat dank and dirty in his stomach. It was pulling, tugging and it was telling him he had to leave before the other tributes decided that they were next to die. At the moment the District Three boy was drawing the fire but it wouldn't be long before they were drawn into the fight.

Kas tugged on Rhea's elbow. "We need to get out of here. Now," he said. Kas gave her hand a squeeze and then he was off, ducking swiftly out of the area. The spear was gripped in his hand and it was so comfortable there. It didn't just feel like wood and metal, it felt like something organic, something that was part of him.
