Grace Newton
Dead Girl Walking Grace-12
Grace usually avoided watching the recaps of the day's events when they where broadcast each evening. She didn't like to be reminded that back home her son would be staring at the television wondering where his mother was, neither did she like to think of the other twenty four families worrying about their own children or family who where in this mess with her. Tonight however she could not avoid it and so sat hunched on the floor waiting as the announcer went though each tribute and gave them a score. Naturally the career districts scored highest, Grace didn't concern herself with that instead she had spent the rest of the day in trepidation of Peacekeepers grabbing her or the television simply rolling a film of her son being killed when it came around to her turn. The scores for District 3 and 4 where mid range which surprised her but when they annoyed her own name Grace was left with her mouth hanging open.

TEN!

She had scored higher then all the careers.

It must have been a mistake! Her prep team of course let out woops of excitement and applause but Grace's heart sank as Jason was scored only a eight. She didn't think he would like being beaten by a girl, let alone the other tributes who she had seen at the weapons stations. They had all been experienced and yet she had nothing at all. As the rest of the Districts where shown she hoped and prayed that someone would beat her.. but there was only a boy from District 11 who equaled her. Whatever he did must have been pretty special Grace guessed as her ally from District 12 was awarded a measly six. Grace didn't understand it, she thought the girl from District 5 and maybe the one from 3 where the ones to beat, yet now here she was with a target on her back...maybe that was the point? Grace thought back to what she had said at lunch and how the other girl had not reacted. Maybe to win the games meant you had to break their rules? Everyone said that a high score was a good thing but Grace just felt that it was more reason for people to hate her. How many tens made it to the end of the games? Grace couldn't even remember the last time anyone from District 5 had got such a high score. Maybe it was a record but she just didn't know.
