The Reaping

The slips in the giant clear ball seem to present many trouble for the children of District Eleven. The hand reaches into the thousands of male slips, and pulls out one name. Pausing to add suspence, he reads the name.

"Nikolas Brown."

The hand then repeats the process for the females.

"Fern Willows."

I approach the podium, my legs shaking, and my palms sweaty. Obviously, I was nervous. But when Fern's name was called, I felt better. I would protect her with my life. I said that in the fields, and I will stick to my promise. Smiling oh-so-softly, I put out my hand to shake.

Fern couldn't believe it when she heard her name, along with Nik's. Shocked, she stumbled up to the podium. She nervously smiled, even though she was scared. Fern knew her or Nik could win. She had confidence that Nik could live; she could live, maybe. Continuing to smile at the crowd, she did her best to ignore any thoughts of her future in the arena, with all the killing.

Then, we get escorted by Peacekeepers with guns to a room in the Justice Building. It seemed like everything was like velvet in there. I sit down on a fairly uncomfortable couch and watch as Fern was escorted to a different room. I wave at her softly.

Fern was deep in thought. Worries attacked her mind, and her optimistic self started to crumble. Fern was scared. She looked up, to see Nik waving. Trying to hide her worry, she smiled, and waved back to her friend.

As Fern leaves the room, I look as my brother in a wheelchair wheels up to me. He doesn't say anything, his eyes and expression says it all. Samuel ruffles my hair, and whispers "Good luck," in my ear. He wheels away, and after a few minutes, I realize nobody else is coming for me.

Fern kept thinking. How small the chances for survival were. That she would have to kill Nik. That Nik would kill her. That someone would kill her. That she would die right away. Fern felt more nervous than ever, and all her positive thoughts seemed to fade away, replaced with worry.

~Sure.

Fern watched her family walk in. Her father, and Aaron. Aaron was crying, and her father seemed on the verge of tears. She went up to her brother. They never got along fantastic, but he was still her brother. "I'll... I'll miss you..." he stuttered threw sobs. Her father said his good bye, like he would never see Fern again. Would she really die?

Through the see through wall, I saw Fern's family. I felt bad for her. She actually had a family, unlike me. I wipe a tear from my eye as I watched. I never cried. But to see Fern and her family...it made me sad.

Fern watched her family leave. She felt so scared. She was nearly clueless of what would lie ahead of her. She knew there would be death. All her optimism seemed gone, replaced with worried and fear.

Peacekeepers entered the rooms, and seized Fern and I. I didn't struggle as they took us to the train station. From the outside, the train looked like a piece of crud. Inside, it was beautiful.

The Peacekeeper dragged Fern away from her District, to the trains. Fern bit her lip nervously. She was never this afraid, scared, worried, and pessimistic. She was panicking on the inside, thinking she would die for sure.

We were thrown into the train, and the doors sealed shut. I look at Fern. "Don't worry. We'll be okay. I promise." I tell her. I would keep her safe, even if I died while doing it.

Fern nodded. What happened to all her enthusiasm? She was just fear. Pretending to be enthusiastic she said, "I know; we'll win!" She smiled, nervously, but her voice just didn't sound as happy and optimistic as usual.

I smile back and nod firmly. "You wanna explore the train? Find our mentor, stylists and stuff?" This was all knew to me. I wanted to take advantage of the good life before it's gone.

Fern smiled, trying as hard as she could to push her pessimism away. "Sure. It can't be that bad, for now..." Fern imagined delicious Capitol foods, and comfy, expensive beds to sleep in. She smiled, and her optimism started to grow back.

I stand up, and outstretch my hand. "C'mon. It'll be fun."

Fern smiled, "Ya," and started toward another area of the train. This would be fun while it lasted.

I follow her through a series of doors, rooms, and tunnels. We soon stumble upon a big feast. My eyes widen. "Whoa..."

Fern smiled enthusiastically, "Wow! This is amazing, I don't even think I know what half this stuff is!" There were exotic fruits, and fancily prepared meats. Her mouth watered, looking at them. Fern smiled. She would enjoy now, and worry about the games when they happen.

I run over to a seat and sit down. I look at all the food, wondering what to what first.

Fern happily stared at the varieties of food. Shrimp, and seafood. Beef. A salad. An odd looking meat that might have been from a bird. Bread, with a creamy butter to spread on it. An orange-ish fruit that looked sweet. After sitting, she stole a bread roll and chomped on it hungrily. It was nothing like cheap, moldy bread back home. It was soft, sweet, and it tasted amazing. "The Capitol has all this amazing food!" She said, wishing she could bring some to her family.

I nod as I chow down on the goose. Mmm...it was way better than the fruit. Definitely. I take a swig of the delicious drink. It made me feel a bit woozy, but I kept drinking it.
