Running from fire

I continued to run down from the second floor and back to the first. I ended up at the courtyard by the cornucopia. I stopped for a moment to catch my breath. What had I started? I looked up at the burning tower in awe.

I sit down on the grass and stare up at the castle in amazement. I run my hands though my hair and take a deep breath. I can't believe what I've started.

I figured that if the building was starting to become unsafe, anyone who could get out would be sure to get far away from it, and where had I come? To the cornucopia. I ran over towards the cornucopia and spread out the net like a picnic blanket. Then, carefully I planted the nails into the ground with the sharp side up in various places in the netting. I use the nature around me to cover the net. Anyone who didn't know better would think it was just leaves on the ground while they were running towards shelter, but I would know better. I tied my rope to the net and coiled it behind the cornucopia to wait. If anyone fell for my trap, all I had to do was tug and they'd be stuck helpless.

I walk around and sit behind the cornucopia, waiting for someone to fall into my trap. The fire is spreading. It shouldn't be too long now.

I sighed as I munched on one of my apples. The fire I'd started was still going and there didn't seem to be an end in sight. Maybe the gamemakers had messed with it to keep it going. I took a small sip of my water, not wanting to waste it. I wondered how many tributes were inside the castle. What if it collapsed from the fire, killing them all? Surely that would entertain the capitol. I leaned against the cornucopia and closed my eyes trying to ignore the smell of char and smoke. I wondered what my sisters were doing. I hoped that they were laughing and smiling in the field making jewelry and crowns out of flowers like they always did, but somehow I doubted that. They were probably staring at the main screen in the center square, watching me and that killed me. I wish they didn't have to see me go through this. I glanced up at the fire again. With the way the fire was spreading, maybe these games would be over quicker than I'd thought.

I wondered why the gamemakers were letting my fire get so large. Surely they had a purpose for it, but I had no idea what for. I leaned back further into the cornucopia and tried desperately to get a little bit of sleep. I'd be on edge and sleepless for too long now.

I was in the castle running down the steps away from the fire, but it kept spreading and getting closer towards me no matter how far I ran. "Help!" I screamed, desperate for someone to find me. The stairs were endless. There was no way out. The capitol's people laughed with glee and cheered me on as I ran from the never-ending fire. The gamemaker smirked at me with amusement and let me be just to see how it played out. Finally, I ran out of steps, but I could no longer move forward. The flames met my skin and licked at it thirstily charring it a shade of black. I screamed in pain and all I could hear were the laughs of the capitol people, the pride in the gamemakers, the welcoming words of my dead parents, and the tsks of disappointment from my sponsors and mentor.

I awoke in a cold sweat. I wouldn't let my sponsors and mentor down. I couldn't.

A small sound wakes me from my post-nightmare stupor and I frantically look around to check my surroundings. I grab my spear and search the area with wild eyes. The sound seems to be coming from behind the few trees that rest behind the cornucopia. I grip my spear tighter as I head towards the noise.

I can hear nothing now that I've moved closer to the trees. I move in more, suspicious of an animal of some sort. My foot accidentally steps on a twig and emits a loud crack that sends a small, furry animal running in the other direction. I run towards it swiftly, and pluck it by the neck. "Gotcha." I laughed

A shiver runs down my back and I drop the creature. My stomach's rumbles just weren't worth it. I back away slowly, gripping my spear tightly in case I need to attack. "I'm sorry." I whispered, "I didn't mean to upset you." I prayed that this was just the upset parent of whatever creature I'd just found, and not some gamemaker generated animal built to destroy me. I crept back towards the cornucopia deciding that if I stayed hungry, I was better off eating one of my dry strips of meat.

I try my best to ignore the menacing red eyes. I remain sitting by the cornucopia, gripping my spear tightly in case I need to attack. I see them begin to retreat into the dark of the woods and I let out a breath of relief.

I probably needed to move, but I didn't know where to go. I needed to stay here to watch the trap, so I could kill whoever hopefully fell into it. I would go back to the castle, but it was still smothered in flames. I was stuck.
