District 12 Reapings!

Subject: District 12 Reapings! Sat Mar 31, 2012 10:46 pm

The District escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 27th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

Frank signed in and went to the 18 year olds section. He looked over at the girls side, scanning the middle for Florene.

"Don't worry Zero. It'll be fine." I headed over to the 15 year olds section.Zero sighed and headed over to the 13 year old section.

I signed into the reaping. I was dressed up just like everyone else today. It was nothing fancy though so I couldn't complain too much. I walked over to the sixteen year old section on the girls' side and took my place. I then looked over to the guys' section and looked at the back for Frank and when I found him my eyes locked there hoping we'd get to at least exchange looks before anything big happened.

My eyes didn't move from his yet and I gave him a small smile, not really a whole hearted one though, how could anyone really smile on a day like today.

I used breathing techniques that Tyler had taught me. I looked around everywhere. Girls and boys. Everywhere. I stared at some people.

I glanced at the stage, and then back at Florene. Eye contact was really the most reassurance I could offer. Let her know we were still both there.

I wish there was more than just eye contact, it was near impossible to talk when so many were talking but even after it died down, you had to be silent for the reapings. What ever we had to say would most likely be saved for later.. If, one of us doesn't get reaped.

.:With a snatch of a paper among thousands, the small envelope was pulled from the big glass bowl. With a deadly taught silence the escort returned to the microphone. A scratch of opening paper, and the escort cleared their voice

"Abbey Swift" they called.

.:The silence deflated like a balloon. "Now for the boys." Repeating the same process the escort loudly said into the microphone

"Tyler Colters"

.:The two tributes had been chosen for slaughter, all that would be left would be to cart them off for their grand appearance in the Capitol. "Now then, are there any volunteers?" The escort asked as their two tributes joined them on stage.

This couldn't have been worse. I am going to die. I look over at Zero, who is crying. I lift my head up high. I can do this for Zero. I can.

After the names had been called I was so relieved I was literally crying happy tears. I wasn't going in this year and neither was Frank. I was so happy Frank hadn't been reaped either. I wiped the tears from my eyes quickly and then looked back at Frank giving him a smile.

"TYLER!!!" I screamed. Everybody looked at me. I could barely see behind my tears. "TYLER PLEASE!!!" I screamed again. Tears were falling down my face so quickly.

Suddenly a lone boy of 18 steps out of the crowd, unable to watch his friend die. "I volunteer!" He shouts, stepping towards the stage. He announces himself as Jim Duss.

I grin back at Frank. We were both safe this time around and it was lovely to be safe for once. I wanted to run and give Frank a hug but the whole thing was still going on.

A girl made her way towards the stage, shouting that she was volunteering. She nearly broke into tears, but held them back as she took her place on stage. Iris Coaler was in the games.

After I watched the two volunteer's of district 12 shake hands and what not I was stunned. I'd never be able to volunteer my self. After they went into the building for goodbyes everyone was allowed to move. I would have ran over to Frank but there were so many people moving. I moved through the people as fast as I could though and I ended up in front of him. Before I knew it my arms were around him hugging him. That was how I knew he wasn't reaped for sure and how I knew he was safe from the games, and as was I.

I smiled and put my arms around Florene happily. "I told you we'd be alright!" I say happily. I think about the bravery of the two volunteers, going in for their friends. "Never thought I'd see two volunteers from District 12" I say, genuinely surprised that it had actually happened.
