District 10 Reapings!

Subject: District 10 Reapings! Sat Mar 31, 2012 10:43 pm

The District escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 27th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

I was at the reaping ceremony for my third year now, I hadn't been picked yet but who knew the odds might not appear to be in my favor and that could be a big problem. I walked up to where all tributes were to sign in. I signed in and followed the wave of district ten children. I was walking over to the girls' side of the large area and found where all fifteen year old's should be. I was much shorter than those around me but I didn't mind much. I was wearing a simple floral dress and my hair was put in one long braid down my back. I was looking around my section a bit to see if Maya was there yet.

.:With a snatch of a paper among thousands, the small envelope was pulled from the big glass bowl. With a deadly taught silence the escort returned to the microphone. A scratch of opening paper, and the escort cleared their voice

"Estrella Lennix" they called.

.:The silence deflated like a balloon. "Now for the boys." Repeating the same process the escort loudly said into the microphone

"Nathan Bennet"

.:The two tributes had been chosen for slaughter, all that would be left would be to cart them off for their grand appearance in the Capitol. "Now then, are there any volunteers?" The escort asked as their two tributes joined them on stage.

I was completely shocked when it was my name being called. I knew my sister wouldn't be too thrilled and then my brothers.. They'd be torn as well. As for my father it would be even worse. I didn't know what to do, my mouth hanged open and I quickly closed it and just kept confidence as I went and I moved up to the stage. Nearly everyone was taller than me but it was alright. I came up to the stage and then watched them pick the boy. It just so happened to be Nate, my best friend. Poor Maya..What would she do if she lost both of us?

Maya ran up to the crowd, upset with herself that she was late. When she heard Estrella's name be called, her heart stopped.

"Estrella..." she whispered. What should I do? I can't volunteer... I've got to talk to her, tell her I'll help take care of her family... and Nate? Why did both of my friends in this district have to be picked? Maya's mind raced. Wait, but... Estrella's injured. I hope she's okay... Please win, Estrella....

While standing on the stage I looked into the silent crowd and eventually saw Maya. Everything fell apart. Poor Maya. Both Nate and I were going into the arena and I knew what Maya didn't, I'd most likely die and as for Nate, he'd have a better chance than I would, a much better chance. I couldn't compete with him. I refused to display any of those emotions I had though, I knew cameras were on the stage like usual. Maya couldn't volunteer her self and I wouldn't let her do it, it was that simple.

Maya attempted to make eye contact with Estrella to let her know that she would help Estrella's family cope with this, especially her father, and that if he was too distraught to function, she would help. I hope they're all okay. Wait- either way, I'm going to lose one of my friends. Maya shuddered as the idea dawned upon her. She contined trying to make eye contact with Estrella and nodded towards her friend's family.

I looked at Maya still and eye contact was no fail. After awhile I knew what she was suggesting. She was saying how she'd look after my family and I nodded my head to her slightly in thanks. I don't know if this was harder on me or Maya. At least I was going in with someone I knew and who was my best friend but..Maya. She was alone besides her family and had none of her friends there to help her through this. As for me..This might have meant my death sentence but who knew. I realized that out of Nate and I..Only one of us would come back, maybe not even any. We still had to try and I promised my self right then and there for my family and for Maya, I'd try my hardest to win and I wouldn't give up in the arena and I'd try and outsmart the careers.

Maya dipped her head. Poor Stella... I shouldn't be thinking of what I'm going to do, but about her.... She'd better survive. Please, let her survive. Not for me... for her... and, well, for me too. But mostly her. And please, if she does die, let it be painless, and if she can't win, I hope Nate does. Or, at least, let them both die peacefully if they have to die. Please, Maya begged, not sure to whom exactly she was praying to. Normally, Maya didn't believe in 'higher powers.' She figured that people made their own choices and shaped the world with them, including each-other. But still... it didn't hurt to try.

It wasn't much longer and then Nathan and I were escorted into the justice building where we would get a short meeting with our friends and family. I waited a little bit and the my family came. My sister hugged me and left crying with her boyfriend. Next follow my youngest brother but he was still older than me and we exchanged a few words before he was carted off. Then my dad and oldest brother came to see me. I hugged them both tightly as if it were the last but some part of me had a game plan growing in my mind and maybe it might be the last..and maybe not. That's when my brother tossed me something. It was a gold chain with bronze lamb dangling down from it. Something for my district I thought. After that I waited for Maya to come in the door and say her good byes.

Maya ran to the goodbyes, glaring at Peacekeepers, and ignoring them when they glared right back. She nodded at one of them by the door and poked her head inside. "Estrella?"

When she spotted her friend, Maya darted through the door, eyes wide. "What are you going to do? You've got to live. I mean, first of all for yourself, obviously, but also for me and for the entire district! Most of all, though for your father and just life itself. Don't let the Capitol be your death. You can win this. It's even possible you could go without killing anybody, but I doubt that will happen. Just-just-I don't know. You can do this. Just picture it all as a game of fence-tag: you can get injured, but if you die I WILL KILL YOU. Okay?" she said at last, finishing off with a weak smile.

OOC: NOTE people this happened before Estrella went on the train.. I wanted this goodbye to happen and I'm getting it if I have to play in the present for a bit.

Everything Maya was telling me for a goodbye made me want to cry so hard but I wasn't going to, not one bit. Had she said goodbye to Nate? had she told Nate the same thing? Probably not. "Maya, calm down.. I already know my dad's in a horrible state and if I were to be killed in some sick twisted way I know he'd try to do something drastic like stop working and all that but you have to promise me something, If I don't make it..For what ever reason because it's a possibility I want you to help my father out and I want you to take Buttercup. No matter what my family says either, if they bring my dead body back to you make them take off my necklace, you'll be the new owner." I say quite fast. I had to tell her that though, if I died she needed to know my dying wishes. "Now if I live..you do know..life wont be the same and it wont be better..We will be without Nate...I don't think we want that." I said sighing.

"Look, I promise on my life that for my dad and for my district I will try to win and go through all the horrors that may be thrown my way." I say and then hug Maya tightly and just embrace her in a hug, this might be the last time I ever talk to Maya...ever.. I had to hug her one last time, she was like a sister to me, and now I was basically being sentenced to my doom. "If I die, I'll always be with you, Maya." I said. "Always, no matter where you are and even if Nate doesn't come back..He'll be there with you, too."

Throughout Estrella's speech, Maya's mind was racing through memories that they had shared, the most recent being the fence accident and the reaping. She thought about Nate for a little while, and mentally wished him good luck. Still, she knew that if she had to choose Nate or Estrella to survive, her decision of choosing Estrella would not waver.

She also guessed that is Estrella did win, she might have survivor's guilt and blame herself for Nate's death or something, so either way, there was a downfall. She thought about past Hunger Games, and how she had pitied the tributes, but never really understood what it meant to know you were probably going to die. She almost felt like she were the one in the Hunger Games, but she knew in her heart that losing her friend was different. It almost felt more personal than if it had been Maya herself, because it left the option open for post-Hunger Games rage and took something away that she would greatly miss.

During the time Estella spoke, she considered all of these facts and speculations, but she still listened and hung on to every word. When she was finished, Maya pushed it all away and smiled, not wanting her possible last memory of Estrella to be in utter sadness. She hugged her best friend back, and uttered two simple but completely genuine words:

"I promise."

I knew I wasn't coming back alive but I was still going to try while I still had the chance, I had to. I didn't know how Maya did it, to push it all away and smile I couldn't smile but I couldn't cry either. No there was a certain for everything. "Maya, one more thing. If Nate does come back alive...Don't let him live in guilt over my death. Don't have him turn into a drunk or a bitter man or anything just let him be happy and let him know these are my exact words. If he wont believe me, by then you'll have my necklace so you'll just have to show it to him." I say. "Also, if you want and you're both alive..You may split the necklace between the two of you... I know this is a lot but this is what I am asking." I said and I still clung to her.

"No one knew it was going to be this way..But Maya, may the odds be ever in your favor for the next reapings to come and that you wont get reaped like me and Nate, I still want you to live on, even if I can't. You can share all the things we did together..With everyone." I say.

Maya smiled, and nodded. "Thank you. Good luck." She patted Estrella on the head again, but made sure to be gentle, and was silent for a while, hesitating before she spoke. "I believe in you, you know. You can beat them. You can win this," she said finally, hugged her friend again, and lowered her head. The peace-keepers were glaring at her again, and she guessed that they wanted her to leave. Maya glared right back with one slightly raised eyebrow as if she were testing them, and wished she actually did have that authority.

"I'll do everything I can to get you a sponsor or something, okay? Maybe the richer citizens have some friends in the Capitol. There has got to be something I can do."

I sighed, I knew the peacekeepers wanted to move on so I hugged her tightly one last time. "I'll do what I can to keep my self alive, and Nate. Don't you worry." I say smiling. "Anything would help." I said and let go. "You'll always be in my mind Maya..Through out it all, you're practically like my sister... I'll miss you and please take care of my dad!" I shouted at her as the peacekeepers dragged her out.

need to start focusing on the in time stuff. But I got a good bye for Estrella and I am happy.)

Maya shouted a last goodbye to Estrella as the Peacekeepers dragged her out by her arms. She waved, then turned to the Peacekeepers, who seemed to share many qualities with lumps of stone. She debated biting on of the on the shoulder and making him put her down, but decided against it. This is not the time to anger anyone relating to the Capitol.

"Wow, you guys really have no facial expressions whatsoever, do you?" she asked them, not being sarcastic. They didn't respond, just continued to look angry, and actually awkwardly constipated. They dumped her on the ground outside, and she death-glared at them. "Rude much?" Maya scolded, and marched off back to her house, not in a good mood, but proud.
