The District 4 escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 27th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

I signed in and went to the guys side, I snuck back to an older guy I knew, Hunter. "Hey Hunter, how ya feeling this year?" I ask, smiling.

I grinned and headed to my section to wait for the names to be reaped.

When I got to my section I looked around. Some people were staring at me. I'm used to it now. I smile and them. Then I wait for the names. "Please be me." I whispered to myself.

.:With a snatch of a paper among thousands, the small envelope was pulled from the big glass bowl. With a deadly taught silence the escort returned to the microphone. A scratch of opening paper, and the escort cleared their voice

"Esther Warrington" they called.

.:The silence deflated like a balloon. "Now for the boys." Repeating the same process the escort loudly said into the microphone

"Hunter Smith"

.:The two tributes had been chosen for slaughter, all that would be left would be to cart them off for their grand appearance in the Capitol. "Now then, are there any volunteers?" The escort asked as their two tributes joined them, on stage.

I smile and hold my hand to the sky, giving a thumbs up to Hunter that he will be able to see from the stage.

My jaw dropped. My hands shook. Sweat poured down my face. Keep a straight face, I told myself. I shuffled on stage. Everyone was staring at me. I felt like crying, but I forced myself not to. Everything felt like a blur. The boy tribute was announced. He seemed happy. I immediately loathed him. How could he find this humane? Perhaps he thought of it as a sport. I didn't care. I was going to die. I looked at my dad in the audience. The odds were not in my favor.

I looked at the girl tribute. "Don't worry, the careers will help you get through this thing." he patted her on the back. Of course, she'd be dead when he won.

I frowned at the boy. "Are you excited to die? Because that's what's going to happen to both of us." I said coldly. But, then I regretted it. "Sorry. That was uncalled for. Let me start over. I'm Esther. Hunter, right?"

I crossed my arms. "Why not? There are 24 tributes and one survivor. You don't need to do the math to know that the odds are NOT in our favor. My plan is die with dignity. I'm not going to put on some act for the Capitol. No way." I said harshly. I sighed and walked with Hunter and our mentor into the Justice Building to await our families.
