"Fair enough" I shrugged. I turned and opened our non-working oven to retrieve one of the last loaves of bread. I broke it in half and offered him the mapely smelling hunk. "They taste something awful." I said. "But try dunking some in the wine. I think it helps."

I laughed and dunked the bread into the wine, then tasted it. "Not bad" I say, choking down a piece. I took another bite, "Just a little dry, is all" I say, swallowing the bread and taking a sip of wine. "Are you sure you don't need this for someone else?"

"My Dad tends to find his own food while he's working." I say. "I don't know how or why, but he's got something figured out for meals, it is rare when I find he's taken something from my tessare rations." I finish off my wine and consider pouring another glass.

I've been drunk before. It wasn't fun and it made me do things I probably shouldn't have done. I don't know what I might do with a victor present. Surely things that would look bad on us both.

I could relate to that kind of thing. "If he works the forest, there's animals all over the place" I say, setting down my wine. "You kill something, you can sneak it back home, the peacekeepers don't really pay attention unless its obvious you're carrying something". I finish off the bread and relax, maybe this night wouldn't be so bad. "So, is it just you and your dad?"

"Well me and someone I'm assuming is my Dad." I reply "I haven't physically seen him for a good month, but I see signs everyday that someone has been here. I remove my thing jacket and move towards the front door to hang it up.

"He's not going to be home until well after I leave for work tomorrow." I say. "Why do you ask?"

I sighed, "Nothing, I just can sort of relate, I don't see my dad much either, but for different reasons" I lean back on the chair, lifting the front legs off the floor. "It gets lonely for me, I guess. But I still have it unfairly better than the rest of the district." I looked at the glass of wine on the table, half full... or maybe half empty? "Money gets a lot of things, but not happiness, not after what they put you through.

I nodded ominously, and looked out through the streaked window pane. "It's pitch black out there." I state, "You could stay the night if you like?" It really was the best offer I could make, my food supply was already dangerously low. So it didn't matter if he stayed. "We can just sleep in my room." I laughed half heartedly. "You don't want to be sleeping in my Dad's bed if he decides to come home early."

I smiled, was she seriously inviting the kid that was now famous for being able to kill to sleep in the same room as her? "I guess I've had enough fighting for a real long time, no need to provoke anyone else". I brought the front legs of my chair back down, "I guess I'll stay the night, then".

"That's settled then." I said matter-of-factly. I poured him and myself another glass of wine. Just this one more shouldn't hurt. "So then," I began feeling my tongue becoming much looser as I drank. "What is the capitol like? What were the other tributes like going into it?"

I sighed again, which I'd done a lot lately. "District six was nicer, especially the girl. They were my allies". I took a gulp of wine, "District four and the eleven guy seemed like big threats in training" I said, thinking over their fates. "Eleven guy got killed by mutts, I think. Girl from four got an arrow through the throat late in the games, and I was given the kill on the four guy" I said, my face tense. The four boy had come to a grim fate in there.

I nodded again solemnly. "It's injustice." I said, then realizing what I just said out loud clapped a hand over my mouth. I should not be saying such things. I decided the best course of action would be to switch topics altogether.

"So what did you do before you were reaped anyways?" I asked. "I'd never saw you before you were up on that stage being carted off. And unfortunately I can't say I had pegged you as a winner either."

"I cant blame you, I was smaller than almost everyone there, I was just strong and fast" I say about not being chosen as a potential victor. "Hell, I didn't even kill the final tribute, I ran away from the thing that was killing him". I moved on from that, "Anyways, I worked in the forest, finding big trees to cut down so we didn't cut down the whole forest to meet a quota".
