Gathering your wits

Subject: Gathering your wits Mon Jul 01, 2013 3:26 pm

Frank Orion

Frank grabbed onto the top ledge and pulled himself up. This freaking mountain was big. He lay on the ground for a few moments to regain his breath and began to look around. It was a more flat area here, seemed like a meadow. Conveniently located in the middle of an alpine setting, that is. He got up and slowly made his way further in from the ledge. Looking for a grassy area, he figured whatever these eggs were, they were to help the tribute who had them. Best to make it somewhere relatively protected, and well, somewhat like what an egg would normally sit in. He set down the sack of apples and took one out, taking a bite of it and looking around for the things he needed, water, long grass, hopefully a tree. This was going to be a long games by the feel of it, so best to set himself up well to outlast the other people striving for the victor spot to save themselves.

Frank begins to hear a quiet high-pitched shrieking sound coming from his egg, which is shaking back and forth a bit. However, it doesn't seem to want to hatch. It's very dark in color, with white streaks. Perhaps it will only hatch at night.

Frank looked over at the egg, "Well then, doesn't sound like happy." he said of the shrieking noise. He kept looking for what he wanted and needed, water, grass, trees. At least one tree, would be good enough really. He figured if anyone were to come up here, he'd hear them by the panting. He had been exhausted when he got up, and he wasn't in bad shape. So most likely anyone else would be the same. He kept walking around the meadow, there had to be something he wanted up here, at least one of three. He glanced back at the egg, wondering what the dragon would be like. He also was wondering, what were the games going to be like with a bunch of dragons flying around, it'd be pretty hard to be stealthy with a giant monster following you around. Luckily, Frank wasn't planning on being stealthy too often.

Frank sees a whole forest of trees on the other side of the mountain.

Frank saw trees on the other side of the mountain and sighed, there were tons over there, but they were too far for the circumstances, he wanted to keep his high ground for a while to see what was up with this egg. He turned back and looked for long grass, he could go for a bit without water and look for that tomorrow. Right now he needed to make a nest for the egg, it seemed like the rational thing to do in this irrational situation that the games had put them all in. "Come on, come on" he said frustratedly, how was there no tall grass in this meadow?

Frank sighed at how all the tall grass was just here and he hadn't looked until now. He started ripping it out of the ground until he had a sizable amount of grass with him. He made his way back through the meadow to the egg and sat down. Setting the grass on the ground, he started to weave it together into the shape of a basket, lucky he had flown under everyone's radar in training and gotten some knot tying done to have some sort of idea how to do this. He finished his basket and set it on the ground, then put the egg in it. Luckily, it was big enough. He took the rest of the grass and stuffed it in around the egg for extra insulation for heat.

The egg has grown a small crack. It seems to like the darkness and warmth coming from the nest. The shrieking fades to an occasional peep. The dragon feels lonely and wants to know there si someone out there.

Frank shifted closer to the egg as he noticed a crack. He examined it carefully. If this thing was going to hatch, he better be able to defend it until it could defend itself. Most likely the first few hours would be the most important for development, so Frank took out his sword from his belt and held it in case. He put his free hand on the egg, rubbing it to keep it warm in case the night air got cool later on. His shield was on his back, ready for use, he could use that to protect the egg from any arrows if a tribute with a bow showed up, and then charge while they get another arrow out.

A boney claw pokes out of the egg, and the dragon begins to make a happy purring sound.

Frank stared at the claw emerging from his egg. It was boney, and creepy, too. Then it began to purr. "What the..." he said, surprised, the purr seemed to contrast with how weird the claw looked. Frank gently touched the claw with his fingers, feeling how rough the skin on the creature was. It would know he was here now, hopefully this thing would be friendly, or at least, on his side. He glanced around the meadow to make sure no one was around, he couldn't let the hatching of his dragon distract him if he had to defend it and himself from other tributes.

Now that it was night, the hatchling burst out of the egg, shaking off pieces of its former shell. It looks like just a skeleton of a dragon, with no flesh or skin to speak of, and snuggles up close to Frank lovingly. It is a Graveyard Dragon.

Frank looked down at the little dragon. It didn't look like it should be alive, it was literally just a skeleton. He put his arm around it to keep away any wind, because I mean, the wind would just go right through the little guy. "Jeez, didn't anyone tell you you're supposed to grow the skin beforehand?" he said, looking down at it. How could something be this nice and yet so ridiculously creepy? He glanced around again to look for other tributes, he didn't want to get caught by surprise. He let the momentary silence reside while he listened to the night, hoping to hear for some sign of water.

Frank can hear the sound of a beach over the edge of the cliff. If he looks down, he will see the coast below, but it is very far down.

Frank sighed, the water sounded far off, it was probably from the ocean surrounding them. He looked at the meadow, it was a good spot for now, he'd stay here until this dragon was bigger, then it would be able to defend itself well so he could take it places, and hopefully it would get big enough to fly. Frank looked up at the stars and imagined himself flying around the skies on his creepy dragon, hunting the other tributes to get these games over with. He wanted to go home, and maybe his dragon friend would be the key to that.

There seems to be a path down the side of the cliff to the coast. It might take a while, but it should be safe.

Frank got up slowly and began walking around the meadow idly, staying close to his dragon. He kept walking close to the ledges to look over them. He saw a castle in the forest below. It was large and looked fairly sturdy. He tried to get a better view, but he was too far away. "I bet there's some tributes in there" he said, scratching his chin, it'd only been a few days since interviews, and already his beard was starting to grow back, if this thing went long enough he'd look like a crazy man from all the facial hair.

Frank's dragon seems to be developing some peeling skin.

Frank turned back to his dragon and noticed something. He walked over to it, or he guessed, him, and looked at him closely. "Oh jeez" he said, seeing the skin growing, even though a lot of the skin fell off as it grew, some stayed on. It was a bit gross, but... "Well at least I don't have to sit on a giant flying spike trap" he said, somewhat thankfully, Frank supposed. "Once you're bigger and can fly, we're going to go on an adventure to a castle" he said, "I don't know what your thoughts on violence and murder is but considering you were born as a skeleton I can only assume." He felt sort of weird talking to a dragon like a person, but he figured that this was the place to talk to animals, he could plea insanity when he got home.

The dragon rubs its nose against Frank's face affectionately, then it develops a surprised expression as flesh-eaten wings spring out of its back and it grows to about the size of a St. Bernard dog. It is now a mature hatchling.

Frank moved his torso back as the dragon grew very quickly to a larger size. "Well you could have warned me a little bit, huh pal?" he asked, checking out the new wings. "Looks like your most prized possessions showed up finally" he said, running a hand along the front edge of one of the wings. He shifted around to see if he could see the castle from here, he just saw the top, but he pointed over at it for his dragon, "That's where we'll go when you're bigger. You'll get to test out your wings and I'll get to get closer to victory"

The dragon grins at him as best it can with it's strange physical form and starts jumping up in the air, floating a bit. It wants to jump off the cliff eventually.

Frank smiled at the little dragon, "I like the enthusiasm kid, keep that with you, you'll go places" he said. He got up and stretched, "I don't know if you like grass or anything, but there's a ton right other there if you're hungry, if not I've got apples for now" he said. Conversing with something that couldn't talk back was a strange sensation, but it felt natural already. It was like the dragons were meant to be talked to as if they could respond, because it seemed they could respond in their own way.

The dragon squeals happily and dives off the cliff, barely managing to catch itself but almost learning to fly. It returns with a fish and gobbles it down.

Frank watched his dragon dive bomb off the cliff, "Well" he said, a bit shocked at that, he ran over to the ledge to see the result, and saw the dragon had managed to land. "Live and learn did not apply itself to this very well" he muttered, as his crazy dragon returned with a fish. "Okay then, this is another place where I could use a little warning before you decide to kamikaze dive for fish off of a cliff five minutes after you grew wings" he said, not sure if he was just noting it or scolding the dragon.
