Collecting

Rachel found herself at beach with pebbles everywhere. She started to walk around carefully. Weighing nearly nothing was making walking on the pebbles easier. She started to pick up a few pebbles here and there. Who knows they might be helpful one day. You can make weapons with your axes and the pebbles, said a voice. Rachel knew the voice; it had become part of her a year ago. “Thank you Rachelle, you’re very helpful. That’s a great idea,” Rachel said. She kept walking around looking for something to use. She also was trying to find signs of life so she could find food.

Rachel’s heart began to pound but she wasn’t going to run. She wasn’t a coward. She put away the pebbles she had collected. She held one her axes tightly. She had a feeling it could be an animal, food. It’s just like killing a sheep. You have to eat so you have to kill. Killing isn’t fun but its means of survival now. Food, the most important thing besides water at this point in time, it was worth the risk. All three of voices in her head told her to fight so fight she would.

A small furry ratlike animal scurried out of the foliage, it was about five inches long and quite plump. The creature looked up at the tribute and hissed, backing away a bit, but holding its ground bravely.

Rachel admired the bravery the creature had. It had more than most humans did. But it had to die. She had to get food. “I’m sorry brave little creature but I want to live so must die,” Rachel whispered. She drew up her axe. She felt bad for killing such a brave creature but all living things will die sometime. She made her first swing hoping she’d make it.

Rachel petted the poor creature. She didn’t like killing but it was a fact of life. She remembered the pebbles and then looked to the jungle. It was still early enough to start a fire to cook the ratlike creature. She would have to wonder into the jungle and risk being attacked. She would do that and find a safe place to cook. She picked the creature up. She was going to get some wood, hoping it was burnable and then take off to somewhere else to cook. She wouldn’t return though. She was going to make a fire then look for water then search for shelter. She started to head where the creature had come from.

Rachel turned around to face the voice. One voice telling her to kill, another to run and another telling her to ally; she had no idea which one to trust. She just stared blankly for a couple of minutes. Does this boy know about her? If he does he doesn’t care. Why should be care in an arena where only the strongest and smartest come out alive?

“I do remember. I suppose you don’t know about what they call me since you approached him while I’m holding an axe covered in blood or you’re not sane,” Rachel said in a distant tone. She looked at the drawn sword and held her axe tighter. She didn’t trust him. She didn’t trust anyone but herself.

Rachel lowered her axe. If he was going to attack her he would have done it. She isn’t sure if this is her trusting him or her being terrified to be alone here at night. She huffs in a frustrated way, making a fire is going to be hard to do with it raining. “I’ve never beat anyone in my life. Nearly the whole District was scared of me. That’s what happens when your mom runs around the district waving a knife all the time,” she sighed. “Alliance? Hmmm,” she said thinking. She didn’t think anyone would ally with an insane girl. “You do know I’m insane right?” she asked. He had to know about her before he would accept any alliance.

“Now that we are on the same page then alliance sounds good. Maybe one of us will get out alive,” Rachel said. She hated that her hair was wet. She didn’t like being wet but she wasn’t going to let that throw her off for a second. “I was going to cook this but making a fire in this rain is going to be hard. I suppose our best bet is the jungle. We should make something for collecting water and maybe try to build a shelter. We are in a jungle there must be something we can use,” she added. “Keep your apple, I’m fine for now but we need water. Being dehydrated isn’t fun but starving isn’t either but you can get used to it while dehydration you’ll die from it,” she said. Being a farm girl was going to help her now. “What did you do in the district?” asked Rachel. “My family was farmers. The foster family I live with now work the shipping of livestock onto trains. I’m never really home though I just live in the barns of former neighbors of mine, I take care of their animals and they give me food," she said. [i]Talking too much Rachel[/i, a voice in her head said. "I'm sorry if I talk too much. I just haven't talked to a human being in a very long time," she said.

Rachel took notice of the rope and a big hallow tree. A rope could be a lifeline. She knew from climbing around District 10 one wrong move could send you falling down a cliff and if you don’t have a rope on hand it could be deadly. Ropes saved lives. It had saved her life a few times. “Don’t underestimate a rope. If you are hanging onto ledge of cliff and there is something you can wrap a rope around it can save your life long as you can tie knots that is. That may be an idea, let’s just hope that there isn’t an animal living in there,” said Rachel. She trusted nothing here. A tree was safe in District 10 but District 10 wasn’t a jungle. “Then we are pretty alike besides the fact Peacekeepers executed my parents right in front of me when I was twelve,” she added.

Rachel noticed the noises from the jungle and she wasn’t sure she trusted it. Maybe right now wasn’t a good idea to go in the jungle. Where could they go? She almost thinks staying out in the open is a good idea. It would be unexpected. “Maybe stay out in the open. One of us awake while the other sleeps. No one is going to expect us to be out in the open,” said Rachel. She was glad she had some form of intelligence.

“If my tongue isn’t burnt by acid we can collect large leaves and make a bowl. Then let rainwater collect in the bowl. If I do then I don’t know,” she said. She stuck her tongue out to test the water. If the water is safe she had an idea.

Rachel rolled her eyes. He has selective hearing. She sighed, it’s not like he can drive her insane when she already is. She didn’t protest just waited. She would protect the area but if something big comes out of that forest she’s waking him up. She isn’t going to take on a bear sized animal on her own. She hopes her rat-like creature doesn’t attract other animals. She wasn’t going to give it up though. She started to play with her axe, it was a new weapon to her of sorts but she had figured out how to use it though. She wonders how far she’ll get with an axe. She hopes far, she doesn’t want to die let. “I’m not giving up yet. I promised my ma if I ever was reaped I’d tried to win even if it wouldn’t gain me anything,” she said talking to herself like she was talking to another person. In a way she was talking to other people since there were cameras all over the place.

Rachel wasn’t sure what to make Talmon yet. He didn’t seem like the type that was going to try to kill her in her sleep but she isn’t sure she trusts him though. He seems nice but some people are the opposite as they seem. In other wards if he attacked her she wouldn’t fell any remorse about it. She wonders how many of them are left. She wonders how long this alliance will keep/
