| The District 5 escort, Stevia Slixx, steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a strained, harsh-sounding voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 30th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names... |

| Evie's Reaping Outfit Evie skipped into the Reaping area, glad she wasn't stumbling around again. She would have been, if she had let Solstice, who had picked out a pair of three-inch heels as a minimum for Evie, have her way. Evie squeezed her hands together, terribly nervous and all alone in the fifteen-year-olds section. Roe was up in 17, Sol in 16, and Rhea was on the stage as a mentor. Chase was in the 17's as well, and Henry... Evie's gut wrenched. Henry was dead. She bit her lip and tried not to cry as she was ushered forward through the crowd. Suddenly, the names were called, and... no. she thought frantically. That is not okay. Solstice and Roe could not leave her now. Not after everything that had happened she refused to let it happen. Lifting her deep blue gaze up to the Peacekeepers, Evie strutted forward, her mind racing. She wanted to volunteer, but was honestly just too scared to do it. Is it wrong to hope someone else will? Evie wondered, trying to push past the peacekeepers to get to Solstice and Roe and failing miserably. "Solstice!" she screamed. "Roe!" A peacekeeper shouldered towards her but Evie stopped and turned to yell at him. "No! Don't you dare look at me like that, Mr. Peacekeeper Man! You are not taking my best friends away to the Capitol. Not again." In her mind, she continued her complaint into a rant. That's just not fair. First my cousin, then my best friend's sister, then another of my friends, and now this? NO! You have chosen me twice and you are not allowed to bring my friends who are part of the reason I'm still here in to kill eachother! |

| ---District 5 Mentor---Female---17---Rhea stood in front of her mirror for far too long this morning. And although she would never have to worry about her name being drawn and being told she was going to be the tribute representing District 5 in the games it didn't seem to stop that feeling in the deepest part of her stomach that could only be from nervousness. Rhea Glass may be safe for the rest of her life, but being a victor did not mean the guaranteed safety of your friends, your loved ones, or even your own children if you had any. This could be the year...the year Roe is picked. Rhea tried to shake the thought from her head as she left her house. But it hung over her like a dark cloud, and no matter how hard she tried to squeeze the thought from her mind it refused to leave.
Rhea walked down the roads her brother by her side. They both were dressed so nice compared to the many years before when they had hardly enough to even feed themselves a decent meal, let alone spend money on fancy dress clothes. But now the Glass children were one of the sharpest dressed teens in the district. But at what cost? Was all the question Rhea always posed in her mind when she put on her new clothes, slept in her new bed and lived off of the 'generosity' of the Capitol as Roe used to always call it during their talks behind the abandoned power plants. "Even after you beat their games, they still own you. Constantly reminding you of how they controlled you." How right he was. Mentoring, reliving your own days in the arena every year and watching two tributes go off onto their death. Year after year, and that was what was promised to her after she took her crown and title. Sometimes I wonder if it would have just been easier to die in the arena. But just as she had done with her previous thoughts of Roe going in, she shook them off as they reached the town square.
Rhea gave Roe a reassuring nod and a quick hug before she moved to take her space on the stage. Last year this seat was empty, she had skipped the last Reapings where her first mentees were chosen. Where Chase was picked and Henry volunteered for him. As she looked out at all the faces that now looked right at her the memories could only flood her mind, bombarding almost every sense. Her hearing, her vision even her smell began to take her back to different places, the first time she met Marcelina and Henry, her own first trip on the train, the sweet strawberry pastry whose flavors danced along her tongue. Then moved to not only the recent times she had spent with Chase but to the cold nights in the cave where she shared in Kaspar's last days on this planet. She just sat in her thoughts until the voice of the escort began to echo throughout the square, effectively jolting her from the deepest place in her mind where she had become comfortably numb.
---District 5---Male---17---The walk to this year's Reapings had been quiet, even more than it usually was in years past. The Glass children normally never spoke much on the way there but there was not even a word spoken as they walked down from the Victor's Village. Normally there was some sort of pleasantries shared, a word of good luck. But Rhea had no need to worry now and Roe could tell that she worried now for only him, and she went back to her old ways, worrying only for him and not for her own well being.
Roe moved along through the crowds. Soon enough his time being eligible for the Reapings would be over and he would never have to worry about this torture ever again. One more year... He made his way up to the very front rows where the older kids were always put and as he stood there he had to fight the urge to look to the left at the girls' section. Rhea was normally placed right across from him in years past, but now she sat on that stage next to the peppy District 5 escort and mayor of their cozy little district. It seemed that she had been lost in her thoughts as he looked up at her. He looked around, scanning the crowds of people trying to pick out any familiar faces. Sol and Evie were both placed across from her back a bit and then the boy that Rhea had been spending so much time with had been put only a short 20 feet away from Roe. It was just a waiting game now, waiting for the names to be drawn, waiting for what might come next.
The peppy escort stepped up to the bowl. "Ladies first." The Capitol-esque woman reached her hand into the large bowl of folded paper slips. She swirled her hand a few times before grabbing the slip with the female names. "Solstice Vernon." Both Rhea and Roe recognized the name, Roe felt the surprise more than Rhea had. The girl began to walk up to the stage before another girl raised her hand to volunteer for her. But next it was the boys' turn and this was the moment that Rhea had feared all morning. She didn't care who was picked, she would help them either way but all she could hope for now was that Roe's name wasn't the one drawn. "Now for the boys." The hand reached into the next bowl and after a few twirls she lifted up the neatly folded sheet. "Roe Glass." The words echoed throughout both of their ears, but Roe's calm and collected self took over as he moved towards the aisle and moved towards the stage. He got up to the stage as Rhea could no longer hold in what she was feeling. This couldn't be right. "This can't be right! You can't have him, you won't take him!" Rhea screamed as she ran towards her brother. This couldn't be happening, it just couldn't be. Not now, not when he was so close to never having to go through this year after year. Her eyes began to tear up, the one person she cared for more than even herself was now going to go in and there was nothing she could do about it. She didn't care if it was against the rules but she ran to him and hugged him as he stood in the center.
Rhea nor Roe had been paying too much attention as the escort asked if there was any volunteers. A boy raised his hand, confidently saying the same words Rhea spoke only two years ago. "I volunteer as tribute." The pair looked out to the crowd as the boy walked to the front and took Roe's spot on stage. As the peacekeepers now broke the two apart to take Roe back to join the rest of the district. Rhea kept the grip on Roe as long as she could before their hands were ripped apart. She looked at the boy who looked like he couldn't be any older than Roe as he spoke his name, Abram Spark, into the microphone. She owed him more than anything she could ever repay. She owed him his life and she had made it her mission to try and make sure this boy survived.

| Â Â ---District 5---Male---17---Another year, another name. Another name, another game. Another game, another goodbye. Another victor, another hi. I remember my dad would say that to me before the reapings, he always secretly hoped it would be me. That was the last thing he told me before the Capitol killed him. Now it's my mother's worst nightmare to have me get picked, after how close I was last year. As I walk with my mom and sister, I look around at all the people around us. The atmosphere is so dark and cold, it's almost sickening. Â My sister, who is only 13, is deathly afraid of the reapings. Last year hearing my name was a scarring experience for her, and if it was vice versa, I would have felt the same way. Having her be reaped would probably be my absolute worst nightmare.Â
I spot Rhea walking with Roe out of the corner of my eye, so I turn my head towards her. I give her a small wave and a grim smile. This time she decided to show, I guess that means she's recovering. I turn back to where we are standing, by the sign in desk. I take all the things that the Capitol requires we hand in, and I set it on the table in front of the sign in man. "Hand." He says in his stupid accent. I crack up a bit, the accents are so simply stupid and ridiculous that it's hard not to. My mom gives me a death glare, and my sister smiles gleefully. As long as she's smiling, there's nothing I'm doing wrong. "Excuse me sir, but this is no laughing matter." I become serious again. "Right." I give the man my hand, and he pricks it for a spot of blood. Then I step through the table area and wait for Jenna. "Alright you know the deal. Don't worry, you'll be fine I promise. In just a few minutes we'll be home eating lunch." I say to my sister with a smile. Once she is in her spot, I head the the male side and take my place. I look next to me, that is where Henry was last year, we were chatting away. He could've still been here. It would just be that I'd be the absent one. I silently wait for the names.
"Ladies first." I sigh, it's no different than every other year. The attendant Goes to the giant glass ball on the girl's side and dives her arm into the bowl. Finally after what seems like an hour of moving her hand around, she takes a slip. "Solstice Vernon!" I freeze, I know her. I rub my head, it seems like I am friends with everyone who's picked. At least your mushy girlfriend can't be picked. "Shut up." I growl. That's when I hear a girl shout. "I volunteer." She takes Solstice's spot on the stage. I silently thank her in my head, I can't bear to know another person in the games. Let alone have them die. Â "Now for the boys." The attendant lady goes to the glass bowl on the boy side, and takes a slip. I pray, that it won't be somebody I know. "Roe Glass!" My heart drops. Him I know even better than Solstice. After I hear Rhea scream, I shout too. "That's not fair! That's not..." I am cut off by a boy saying something. "I volunteer as tribute!" I watch as a boy makes his way to the stage, taking Roe's place. I am so thankful for this boy. "Thank you.." I whisper even though he can't hear me. Even though I know I should feel relieved I wasn't picked, I'm not. Because from here on out, I have no control over what happens to the district five tributes this year. | |

| Evelyn "Evie" Northwood ----------D5 - Female - 16- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Evie collapsed in Solstice's hug and breathed a huge sigh of relief when Roe, too, got a volunteer. Peeking out from under Sol's arm, Evie noticed that the male volunteer looked a bit familiar. Is that...? Evie wondered, suddenly recognizing the boy. Is that Abram Sparks? As in, Kara's Abram Sparks? Abram Sparks was the boy who Kara, Evie's older stepsister, has been in love with since they were 8 years old, but who had been pushed away by Evie's stepmom, Ruby. Ruby had deemed Abram unfit for her daughter, and when Kara told her she wanted to marry Abram one day, Ruby said she could never see him again. Suddenly, Evie froze and melted out of Solstice's hug. She had just caught sight of the female volunteer, who was passionately holding hands with Abram. It was Kara. "Oh my gawd..." Evie started, stumbling a bit. She tilted her head. Evie and Kara weren't really friends, but it still saddened her to see her stepsister get picked. Abram had always seemed pretty cool, too. Kara seemed to be so in love with Abram that she'd rather die with him than live without him. That's really brave, realized Evie with some admiration. Really stupid too, but really brave. Evie looked up at Kara, gaining a newfound respect for the girl, especially since Kara's plan had saved Evie's best friends from extinction. "We should go find Rhea and Roe and Chase..." Evie muttered to Sol, not breaking her stare towards the stage. "Make sure they're all... they're all okay..." She pulled Solstice through the crowd to look for their friends, trying not to think about the fact that Henry wasn't there to find, and never looking away from the new District 5 tributes of the 30th Annual Hunger Games.
