The Reapings

The District 3 escort, Kaysie Alinatata, steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a squeaky, annoying voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 30th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

Nasira found herself amongst all the other girls of her district from the little 12s all the way up to the larger 18s. her expression remained stoic, unwavering and unafraid if her name got picked. well, as long as it wasn't a swimming race in the arena. that'd be enough to keep the dark-skinned girl trembling on her plate.

she listened attentively for the girl's name as it was called, and when it wasn't her, she remained in her mechanical pose, as if nothing had happened. a brief glance up at the tributes as they were chosen showed her a couple of faces different from hers, but such was to be expected. whatever the case, sh was 'safe', for another year.

Carmen listened to the announcer as she was talking about the games, but all she could think about was volunteering. She was looking at the scared faces around her ones that didn't know she was going to volunteer for one of them. For a second, Carmen thinks that she should just stay and not volunteer. When they call a name, everyone in my grade looks at me to see my response. I have to do it, "I volunteer for tribute."
