Run Away Sheep (OPEN)

having never been the one to unnecessarily break the silence, Lyndis' lips remained together, though her demeanor had changed. she didn't look quite as hostile as she usually did, (even though she wasn't usually a hostile woman to begin with) and instead looked calm.
her eyes followed Rachel's towards what she recognized as makeshift grave sites. she remained silent, as if to give her respects for these two unknown individuals.
"I'm curious to know who they were, but there are some things that probably shouldn't be asked at certain times, especially towards younger children or less stable adults. were they old? young? sisters? brothers?"

her thoughts were only interrupted when Rachel spoke up again. she glanced at the large yellow barn, raising an eyebrow. it was rather impressive in her opinion.
"your father's got some skill," she nodded approvingly, "it's a nice barn."
it certainly was in contrast to the house, but that wasn't Lyndis' place to judge. there was always a reason for everything, and it was always good to think before speaking, which was half the reason she would plunge herself into deep thought so often.

“He puts his grief into his work. He started saving money after my younger brother, Andrew, died from the measles. Then started to work on after the death of my other younger brother, Andrew’s twin brother, Sonny was killed by a neighbor’s bull that got out. He was wearing red, you know what happens when a bull sees red,” Rachel said running a hand on the wood pained yellow.

Rachel looked back at the house a shook her head. “He refuses to redo the house. Too many memories are stirred up. Once it was amazing as this barn, it had been built by my great-grandfather. It was stunning from what my father tells me from when he was my age,” she added. She had never tried to build anything, she wondered if she had the same ability. She adored her father’s work on the barn and wondered what the house would look like if he were to rebuild it.

Lyndis frowned. "so they were brothers... twins no less... and younger than her... they couldn't have been more than little children. even I gotta admit, that's a freakin' terrible age to die, dammit. I've already got it fixed that there's no way in hell Lil's getting reaped for the games while I'm still eligible... but death is death. that's terrible." "...I'm sorry for your losses." she said softly. in fact, she hardly heard herself say it.

she nodded. "everyone has a memory or two that are too painful to bring up. I can understand his trouble though... no parent should ever have to bury their child."
"and yet 23 parents have to do it every year..."

"still," she said, attempting to try and bring up a happier subject, "there are some talents that can pass down through the generations. it's surprising how crafty some people can be when the situation demands it."
she had some building experience herself, being the eldest child of her family, and a strapping, able-bodied young woman. her gender had never mattered, she did mostly men's work anyways, since her parents only had her and her sister, meaning they only had girls.

"what's on your mind?" she asked curiously, hardly realizing what she had said till it left her mouth.

“I’m just thinking of what the house with would look like my dad ever rebuilt it,” Rachel said honestly. She didn’t really have anything to hide. Lyndis already knew the place she lived, her insane mother and her dead siblings. There was nothing left to hide.

She starred at the storm clouds forming overhead and hoped her father either found shelter or got home early. Traveling in the rain with sheep with impossible, she certainly wasn’t going out to find her father since he was smart enough to handle himself. She’d just have to wait for his return and hope they didn’t lose any sheep.

"I bet it'd be pretty." she nodded, "whatever the case... I hope you can find some good fortune."
she paused, not really having much else to add. "it was nice to meet you Rachel. hopefully we can see each other around... unless you needed something else?"
this last question was an offer, and the entire statement was one that Lyndis usually did not make so freely. Rachel had gained Lyndis' respect through her openness. Lyndis was not normally the type to hide things, she just didn't spout them out unless it was relevant. if Rachel asked, she'd tell.

still, there was a small smile on her face, which was more or less how she offered friendship. that was Rachel's decision though.

Rachel smiled at Lyndis. She had nothing else to really say. She should be starting up a supper before the rain starts. She didn’t really need anything either. There was nothing left for her to really mention at the moment she could think of.

“I’m good. Thank you very much for your help,” she said. “You have no idea how much you’ve helped me out today,” she added. She started to wonder what she would make for supper. She just guessed it would be whatever she could find. “I hate to make our meeting so short but I need to start on supper,” she announced.

"no problem." she nodded, "I... well I'm glad I could help, I guess."
she actually didn't really know how to handle that remark, and so she took it with a friendly nod. she wasn't exactly known for being a helper--she wasn't a hinrance; she usually just kept to herself. this was rare for her.

"well, have fun with supper then." she actually cracked a smile; a rare smile indeed. "I'll catch ya later."
with a polite nod and a wave, Lyndis took off back into the fields, her bare feet making minimal noise as they brushed against the grasses as she ran.
