District 12 Reapings!

Subject: District 12 Reapings! Tue Jun 19, 2012 1:02 pm

The District 12 escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 28th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

Griffin Sawyers

I won't care if I get reaped. In fact, maybe it'd be better that way. Death doesn't seem like a bad option to me right now. I stand in place as the announcer speaks. My eyes are closed and I'm thinking. Seeing images of what I'd do in the games. Seeing myself getting killed in the bloodbath. Then I open my eyes and wait for the names.

When we waited for the names in the reaping what happened next shocked me. I was picked for the games? I wouldn't make it far and I knew it. I was just an emotionally unstable girl from district twelve who was slowly recovering. How was this possible? If I died.. Everyone would be happy. My parents would be happy and Adara would be happy no doubt. Now Adara would have Griffin if she so pleased, I lost the so call battle Adara had up in her head. Maybe I could make it out alive but I wasn't certain of that. I walked up to the stage as everything was silent. Wait, was it Griffin who was called for the boys tribute? I wondered if there would be any volunteer's.

Adara stood silently in the crowd, not moving, not speaking, not showing any emotion. It is unacceptable for anybody to realize I'm going to miss her. Adara thought to herself, biting her lip and staring at her former friend. Poor Griffin. No, poor Maria, actually. Honestly. It was his fault that they were kissing. I mean, sure, we liked the same guy, but she wasn't the one who made the move. I hope he cries. Adara's last thought surprised her. God, what is wrong with me? I spend years trying to win over someone and now I hate them? Wow. Maybe the reaping is really getting to me. She swallowed her pride and waved goodbye to Maria, tears welling in her eyes and threatening to fall. She held them back, but that didn't stop her having a pained expression. "I never wanted her to die..." Adara whispered, so quietly that only she, herself, could hear.

A boy stepped out of the crowd, he went by the name of 'Claudius Voltaire' He put his hand up and said "I volunteer as tribute!" He called and then walked up to take Griffin's place.

I looked at the boy who had volunteered in Griffin's place. I was alone and I was going to die, I wasn't going to make and I knew it. Finally the peacekeepers took us to the justice building and I sat down waiting wondering if anyone would even think of coming to visit me.

Adara slowly walked up to the door that Maria was behind. She wanted to leave, wanted to go on with her life, wanted to forget. But she couldn't. If Maria was going to die, there was something she needed to do. "Maria?" she whispered as a Peacekeeper let her in. "I know I might not be the person you really want to talk to right now, but there are things I have to say." Adara swallowed her pride, took a deep, shaky breath, and continued.

"First of all, I know that what I said the day of our fight was wrong. Just because you were brought up differently then I was in a different time, a different place, it doesn't mean anything. People shouldn't be judged based on their finances and I am ashamed that I even brought it up. That's not your fault. I didn't do anything to be born into a wealthy family, and, as far as I know, you didn't have any reason to be born in the Seam. It just happened. That's all, and I'm sorry for what I said. I don't know why. I just said it. Things just... happen. They don't need a reason or a cause or a intensive to occur, they just happen, and there's nothing that can be done, because even though I'm apologizing for what happened, it still happened. It doesn't make it go away. It's a treatment, not a cure. There's no excuse. I know that. I do. I also know that you being picked for the Games? That's another thing that just happened. Call what you will, luck, fate, destiny, it doesn't matter why, it just matters that you might die, Maria. And I don't want you to die."

Adara wiped away a tear and closed her eyes. "He loves you, you know. He always has. It was never going to be me. I don't even know why I- look, he really does care about you. I know he does. I can tell. And-and I wanted you to know," she stuttered, biting her tongue and forcing the words out, "that I lost. I know it isn't a game to you, and it shouldn't be a game to me, but that's just how my mind works and you won. Maybe now that my brain thinks the game is over we can finally have some peace, but if it took this," she paused, gesturing around the room to signify the fact that Maria was a tribute was what she was getting at, "to make me even realize that I was wrong... I don't know. I don't know, Maria, I don't know what's going to happen. But I'll miss you," she finished, trying to smile through her tears. Once again, she wanted to leave, to run away and pretend that this had never happened. But she couldn't. Adara knew she couldn't. And so she waited.

I was waiting for awhile before someone came in and when it was Adara I wasn't that surprised and if anything I rather have her here right now because I knew she wouldn't make me want to cry. I watched her come in and face me. When she egan to talk it was a lot and I had to try and remember everything she had said. It really was a whole lot to take in and I breathed in deeply. I listened though and made sure I remembered most of it.

When she finished talking to me I looked at her still and nodded. "I understand, I'm happy you finally apologized but I never held it against you." I say looking at her still not letting my eyes drop. "I'm sorry for making you feel like this was a contest, honestly I will probably die out there in the games, I'm not afraid to admit it, Adara." I say and finally my gaze drops. "I am terrified, I really am but I will die being me..I swear by it. You can have him if you want..I probably wont be coming back at all." I say not allowing any tears to fall down from my face. "You can leave now, I know you want to.. You want to run far away and pretend these things don't happen when reality is they do and there isn't anything we could ever do to stop it." I say at last looking at her again.

Adara frowned. "After all this, you don't get it? After everything? I never hated you! I never wanted to have Griffin! He made his choice. I accepted that. I just wanted to be the one that came out on top. I didn't want to be the one who was alone. I knew that two of us would group together, whatever way it turned out to go or be, and that somebody would be alone. I didn't care if it was you, or if it was Griffin who I ended up reconciling with, I just didn't want to be the last one left. I didn't want to be alone. And now I will be. I don't want you to die! I never wanted that! I don't want- please, please don't die. Come back from those Games so we can work this all out. I never knew what to say to you. All these years, even before the fight, especially before the fight, I didn't know what to say or how to say it. Your life was so much worse than mine, your past was so tragic, and I couldn't even compare. I didn't know how you managed to not cry every second of every day and I didn't understand you. I still don't understand you. I probably never will. But I'm trying..." Adara trailed off. She couldn't make another little speech. Not again. She just took a step forward, hugged the girl that used to be her friend, and left. There wasn't anything else she could say or do to change anything. Adara hated the idea of running from a problem. It was like forfeiting a battle. But she did anyway. If I stayed, I would have only made things worse, she realized, and ran.

After Adara left saying all that I was left there thinking about it. For quite awhile no one else really came to visit me but finally my parents did visit me and we talked a bit and hugged each other. They already didn't expect me to come, they lost two out of three children already what would losing their thrid do? I sighed, I supposed Griffin wasn't going to come visit me, so should I just get on the train? Or stay here a bit longer until the peacekeepers force me onto the train?

She's the one who should've gotten a voulenteer. Not me. It would be so much better. Why did he voulenteer? Listen to yourself Griffin. You should be grateful. I push open the doors to the Justice Buliding. Some Peacekeepers lead me to Maria's room. "Maria." I stare at her.

When someone came in and spoke my name I knew it was Griffin. My eye shifted upwards to look at him. I was happy he came to see me but at the same time I wasn't..I didn't want to have to say goodbye to him, pretend I'd try and for him, promise I'd win for him because I knew it wasn't possible..I just knew. I doubted my abilities most times but I wasn't exactly stable either and that was a huge issue for me I knew it'd weaken me. "Griffin." I managed to make out. I bit my lip and my eyes shifted down again. "I'll probably die, I wont lie." I say softly and silently.

"Can you at least try?" I sigh deeply. "Listen. I don't expect you to say 'Oh, I promise I'll win' or anything, and I don't expect you to try to win for me, or Adara, or anyone but yourself. But could you at least try to win? If you give up that would make you a coward. And I know you're much braver than that."

"I didn't say I was giving up, Griffin." I say looking down at my hands and I twiddled my thumbs. "I just don't think I will win, I'm not prepared.." I say and then I say very quietly for only him to hear, "I'm not stable enough." I don't dare look up at him, I can't because if I did I would be able to look down again.

"Hey. Nobody is prepared." I shake my head. "You can win if you apply yourself-" Then I soften my tone. "I know you didn't have enough time to heal," I say quietly. "But sometimes pain is what powers us. I'll live in pain everyday knowing that you could die any second... But I'm sure it'll help me realize what you mean to me."

"Careers are prepared." I noted softly and finally my eyes looked up at him. When he spoke about the whole pain thing I gave him a little smile. "I know she may not really be my friend right now but..I-In case I don't come home...Could you take care of Adara? be around her? You don't have to be in love with her or anything but like, just be there for her like a friend, she really is lonely and has no one, and if I could change one thing before these games I would have never made her feel lonely the way I did, I just need you to do it, please." I said meaning it all. I understood I had done wrong with Adara, I hadn't fully given her my attention, she didn't understand me but I hadn't understood her either, now I think I finally understood her.

"You're smarter than them." If she wanted to be, I'm sure Maria can be smart. "Yes, I'll take care of Adara. I'll be her friend, I'll be there. I got it." I say with a small grin. Time is almost up for me, I know it. "And, also, don't let anybody in the Capitol change you. If you come home, I want you to be the same as you are now. Speaking of which," I sure do talk a lot. I run the back of my neck. "If you come home, will you just ignore me and hang out with all the popular people? Because.. I want to spend time with you if you win."

I looked at Griffin, how would he even think I'd be so selfish as to not neglect him? I sighed and looked at him. "I wont ignore you, Griffin, I will hang out with you but I will have to hang out a bit with them too, they might get jealous if I spend all my time with you." I said jokingly and laughed a bit. "I wont come back the same if I do win, if I win I'm coming back changed, not in a bad way in a good way, I want to come back healed." I said smiling.

"Well I wouldn't want them to get jealous." I say with a grin. "Thanks. Sometimes I get worried that people might.... Forget about me. But I know you won't." I ruffle my hair a bit. "Just don't let them hurt you in a way you can't heal. Broken bones, gashes, and all that are things you can heal. Don't let them get into your head, because if they don't you'll come back healed." I see Peacekeepers enter the room. "Wait. Before I go, I have to tell you something."

I listened to everything he said and nodded. I understood and I smiled a bit at him. Then when the peacekeepers came in he mentioned he had to say something and I looked at him curiously. "What do you have to tell me?" I asked waiting for him to respond and hopefully before the peacekeepers took him away.

"Well first," I take off my silver watch. "If you don't already have a token, you can use this if you'd like. So you'll remember that I'm waiting for you." Then I place my watch in Maria's hand. "I expect that you get them out by day 5, but I'll settle for a bit later." I say jokingly. Then I feel the Peacekeepers take hold of me and start pulling me out. "I love you. See you soon." I smile and say just as they pull me out.
