Now, Samuel would follow his older brother any day. But did he really have to watch peacekeepers all day? All they did was watch the streets - it was like they were too lazy to move at all! Utterly bor- oh wait? As Sam watched, a girl about his age came out of one of the buildings, heading straight for him. He cracked a smile and slunk away from his post. Now this would brighten things up.
As the girl walked by, Samuel stepped out to bump into her, as if on accident, “Oops,” he said with a sheepish grin, taking a step back to get a better look at her, “Sorry, couldn’t see with all this dazzling beauty,” he gestured at her, then made a face, as if realizing how cheesy he sounded. “Okay, I know that was bad, but how about you pretend it was the best line you’ve ever heard, eh?”

Flora had searched her whole house for her father, but he was nowhere to be found. She'd spent a lot of time going room by room, and actually discovered a study that she'd never known existed. Now she was tired and a bit frustrated, and she'd given up. She decided to take a walk through the district to clear her mind, and the minute she left her house, she crashed into another human being. Before she could apologize, the guy spouted the absolute cheesiest pickup line she had ever heard. Flora was flabbergasted for a minute, and stood there speechless until she regained her composure. "Uh, yeah I would say 'bad' is an understatement..." she looked at the guy again, then smiled. "You're lucky you're cute enough to get away with it coming off as endearing." She extended her hand for him to shake. "I'm Flora."

Score! The girl gave him a smile - smiles always meant success. He let out a short laugh as he took her hand. "Nice to meet you, Flora," she had a surprisingly strong grip, for a girl, he noted, "I'm Samuel. Or Sam, whichever. And you said best wrong." He winked at her, then let go of her hand. Sam made a move as if he was about to step away, then paused, looking at Flora as if in deep thought. "Wait a second..." he said, "Did I hear the words "you're cute" a second ago?"

Flora tilted her smiling face slightly to the side. "Likewise, Samuel." She shook his hand sharply, like she used to see her dad doing and had practiced copying when she was little. Flora raised her eyebrows at Sam's wink. The obvious flirting and cheesy pickup lines were amusing, but typically she would just have nodded politely and blown him off. This time, though, she felt like playing through the conversation a bit. "Indeed you may have, Sammy, if you were listening." She laughed."Who taught you how to talk to girls, anyway? You shouldn't just rely on looks and hope she's entertained by terrible lines. That's just passing flirtation, mm? Easy, on the spot. Doesn't really make a girl feel wanted."

"Well, it seems to be working at the moment, yeah?" he laughed with her, "I mean, you're still talking to me, aren't ya?" For a moment, Sam found himself looking in her eyes. She definitely wasn't falling for the idiot act - he could see she was too smart for that - but she also didn't look entirely irritated. That meant more entertainment, if he could pull it off right. "And who says I wanted more than 'passing flirtation'? You're the one giving nicknames around here, not me."

Flora pressed her lips together. "Define 'working'." She chuckled. "Yeah, all right, still talking, that's fair, but I'm only talking to you to critique your flirting techniques and save some other poor girl from having to endure that cheesy a line again, so I'm not sure if that's a success." She realized that the advice was flirting in and of itself, but the boy's only advantage was his natural charm, and he couldn't get by on that forever. She felt a responsibility to educate him. "Nicknames can be casual, Sammy, dear, almost diminutive. They don't have to be personal. They can tease at personal, but I assure you, not that much thought went into those two syllables." She didn't consider herself a master on the subject of flirtation by any means, but she'd learned a bit from experience, and she found that most boys didn't really know what they were doing because they learned from watching other boys who didn't really know what they were doing instead of understanding the target's reaction. "True," she admitted, "but the flirtee doesn't need to know that. If they think you're opening it up to something more lasting, and then you cut it off, that leaves them wanting more. It's mysterious, intriguing. You want to draw the person in, not bounce off of them, even if you're planning on whisking yourself away a moment later. Of course, you don't want to come on too strong and scare them off. It's all in the subtleties... but if you're going for passing flirtation, you usually shouldn't continue the conversation this long."

It was all Sam could do to not let his jaw drop at the girl's comments. Who the hell really thought they needed to analyze the science of flirting? This girl was crazy - accurate, but crazy. After a minute, he found himself silently laughing. Finally, he couldn't hold it in. "Woah, woah, hold up there," he said, finding it impossible to compose himself, "You do realize that there's no reason to analyze my flirtation techniques, right? Maybe I just liked talking to you. Or, maybe I just think it'd be rude to walk away. Who knows?" He glanced over her shoulder for a moment, noting that the peacekeepers hadn't moved in all that time, "Certainly no need to give me a lesson on it, right?"

Flora shrugged. "I would assume you'd want to improve your flirtation for greater success in that department, or just for the general good of all those you flirt with, which I'm sure is a lot of people, but whatever. I do actually have better things to do, surprisingly enough." She knew she'd gone a bit overboard, but she didn't particularly care about some random dude's opinion of her at the moment. She smirked. "You liked talking to me, hm? Maybe? Maybe if I'm talking about more than your flirting skills, or lack thereof?" Flora wasn't sure was the aim of the conversation was. She did notice Sam look at something, and this caught her interest. "What exactly are you doing here, Sammy? Stalking an ex? Should I be intervening?"

Well, the girl was right about one thing; the conversation had obviously gone on for much too long. Sam rolled his eyes at her comment, preparing to make some excuse to ditch the flirtation lesson, but then she said something that made him stop. Shit, she'd noticed the glance. The entertainment left his expression for a split second, then he laughed again. Afterall, the girl hadn't seemed to think much of it. "The way you're talking, I'd be lucky to get a girl around here," he gestured to her general vicinity as he spoke, "and if I was, say, stalking an ex in this area, would I spend so much time distracted by your intervention?" He wondered, briefly, if she even recognized that he wasn't actually from the upper district, despite the fact that he'd cleaned himself up enough to look as if he totally belonged in the middle of the street. And, even if she had, would it matter? It wasn't like she'd actually guess what he was doing here, right?

Flora narrowed her eyes. There was definitely something up with this one. She'd thought he'd looked a bit on edge before, but figured it was just an initial reaction to her, some hidden insecurities. She still thought she could see tension in his shoulders, so it was something lasting. Flora presumed it was the reason he was here. He looked somewhat bedraggled, but there were always tough times in their district. "You're being very mysterious." Flora gave a teasing, slightly mischievous smile. "Are you hiding something, Sammy?"
