If your not familiar with the idea that if something can go faster than the speed of light, it can travel through time, here's an example. Let's say a man is somehow on Pluto (meh, just an example). Because it will take around 2-3 hours for light to reach Pluto from Earth, if you look through a telescope, you will see Earth as it appeared 2-3 hours ago. If Earth suddenly vanished, you would still see it for 2-3 hours after vanishing. At the speed of light, it takes 2-3 hours to reach Earth from Pluto, but if you surpassed the speed of light, then it would take less time. If you go to Earth at a speed faster than light, you would be able to go there in the past because you're going there before the light from Earth can reach you. I hope this makes sense. xD So, technically, you can never see the present. You really see life as it was a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, TINY, TINY fraction of a nanosecond earlier because it will take light time to reach your eyes.

Anyways, I had a random thought - let's say someone is in space. They're in... A ship or something, 2 light-minutes away from Earth. They send something to where his friend on Earth was 2 minutes ago at a speed justtt faster than light. He's on the phone from space (somehow, I dunno) with his friend who got the object. Would the object just appear out of nowhere? Will the man back on Earth suddenly have the memory of getting the object 2 minutes ago? Would the man on Earth be able to tell his friend that he had the object 2 minutes before it was sent? Then that would mean the future was set in stone. That would mean that he will definitely send the object. So that must mean there are 2 in existence for the next 2 minutes. Would time travel also be a means of cloning, then? What if the man sent himself to his friend on Earth faster than light's speed? Would he be able to talk to his 2-minutes-into-the-future-self for the next 2 minutes until he sends himself? But once he sends himself 2 minutes into the past, there will still be him in space, 2 minutes before he sent himself. Would that mean every 2 minutes he will keep reappearing? Oh wait. If he sends himself into the past, he would have been the one in the past, and therefore replacing this "clone" of his. It is him, though. He's in the past in 2 minutes. Will it be an endless cycle? When he sends himself to Earth 2 minutes in the past, he'll be in the past, acting exactly as his friend was aware he was acting for those 2 minutes. What if his friend tells him how his future self is acting in the past? Then his future self would not act exactly like that, but his future self in the past is truly himself, therefore his past self would have to change his behavior... But he would have already known how he was acting in the past because he had received the call of how his past self was acting in the present. It'd be an endless cycle... The one on the ship will be aware of the one on the Earth who had been there for less than 2 minutes, and the one on Earth would have already experienced this, and had been on the ship aware of himself in the present from the future... I could rant like this forever, but I won't... My brain's going to explode if I keep thinkinggg. Ack, whatever. I'm gonna go read fanfiction the rest my brains... Butttt, I'm really, really curious. I want to be an astrophysicist when I grow up. :D

I don't know if any of my logic is correct; I'm only 13. Well, I know the whole faster than light=time travel was theorized by scientists... But for the rest I'm just spitting out theories. xD

This is actually pretty close to what my physics teacher told me when I ask. (yes I asked just for you xD) Assuming you're leaving earth at say the speed of light. That means it'd take you a year to get a light-year away. Since the speed of light is the max speed an object can go, yes time travel the way you're saying is possible.

If I gave you to ice cream cones (no icecreem) and you put them end to end (skinny end together) the point at which they meet should be thought of as the present. The end of the cone is a light year away. a body can not move through the past, so you'd have to go forward. you will be moving your present with you, while leaving their present behind you. There for you'd be traveling into the future.

If you were a light year away, and you sent light to your friends house, a year later, if you called him, even if you were able to, a light year away would delay your conversation by longer then a year, since nothing travels faster the light, neither can radio waves. By the time your friend would be able to communicate that he saw your light, it'd be atleast 10 years after you sent it.

traveling the speed of light for 20 years, you wouldn't age yourself because you are stuck in the present, and everyone else is in the past, but when you came back it wouldn't be earth 2042, it probably be earth like 2212. because you never aged, and everyone else did, every bit of technology would be new to you. but even though is theoretically possible, it's not likely to achieve because: The terminal velocity of something is far below that of light speed, and it takes mass to move it faster, and more mass means more energy spent moving it. If you were in a craft going light speed, you'd have to add mass to it until you reached the right amount, and after that point you'd have so much mass and be traveling so fast, that you'd stop suddenly. you wouldn't age for about 1 second. is all of this making sense?

I just re-read this and I semi-agree with what Bowy said.

You mention you're on the phone with a friend. Well seeing how Radio waves travel much slower than light there would be a noticeable delay between you talking and you're friend hearing it, for this example I'll call it lag time.

If you're 2 light minutes away from Earth we can hypothesize that Radio waves take double the amount of time. So 2 Light Minutes (LM) = 4 Radio Minutes (RM)

We can safely assume that if you send something faster then the speed of light, known as the particle dispersion acceleration theory, that you're friend will receive the object at 1 LM.

This is assuming that 1 Particle Minute (PM) is 1/2 of an LM.

Let's give an example.

At 10:30 you say to your friend through your phone. "Hello!"

At 10:31:30 you partically charge an apple to your friend.

At 10:32 they receive the message and the apple at the same time. Radio waves took double the time and Particle minutes took half the time.

The theory that if something moves faster than light it's time travel is exactly that. A theory. The secondary theory in which I mentioned takes the basic concept of atoms, in which everything is made, and bends them through your space craft with some very complex magnetics.

Since humans can't, however, travel at the speed of light we can not prove or disprove the theory of using atoms to boost light speed.

Light bounces off of atoms, so if we move the atoms there are no light and therefore we can travel through and faster than light.

That is what I think on this. Any questions? (:

BTW if you tossed an apple at your friend from space, they'd have very hot/burnt/incinerated apple sauce.
