Extra Credit

Extra Credit. Two words Kori didn't want to hear. Every year, it was the same, do the project or you don't move on to the next grade. So he always did it. But couldn't they just give him a break once in a while?
Apparently not, because after school on a dreary Monday, Kori sat in his usual seat, waiting for Mr. Coilton's assignment. It was just him and the Chemistry teacher, but neither had said a word. That was unusual; it seemed as if Mr. Coilton was waiting for something. Kori started twirling his pencil, but that got a look from the teacher, so he slowly stopped that. Mr. Coilton went back to waiting, and it was pretty obvious that he was looking at the door, which was about halfway closed. Kori opened his mouth to ask what the holdup was, but at that moment the door swung open as someone walked in. Hopefully it was whoever Mr. Coilton had been waiting on.

Skylar hated being at home it was too much to handle some days so any chance she got for extra credit she'd take it, since it got her away from home and all the troubles there. Most teachers understood, since she had no reason to do extra credit assignments, she had near perfect marks in almost all her classes so getting the extra credit either put her at one hundred percent or above it and she was okay with that, that meant she'd be placed in a better job most likely, and she just wanted to be a doctor she wanted to help people, but as far as her dad was concerned it was a man's job. Not everyone was like her father though, well most people weren't but she wasn't allowed to tell anyone what he was like, there was always someone around watching and reporting back to her dad.

Sighing she shoved the thoughts away, and she grabbed her bag and slung it on her arm, the teacher was waiting for her and she didn't want to keep Mr.Coilton waiting. She soon knocked on the door and entered. "I'm sorry I'm late sir." She said to him and then she looked over to see a boy. She knew him, not in a friend way but she knew his name and that he was in her grade. She came in and sat down in a desk away from his for the moment. She didn't want to get too close.

"No problem, Miss Blitz," Mr. Coilton nodded for her to take a seat. Kori rolled his eyes. He gave her a half-hearted wave. "Miss Blitz," as the Chem teacher called her, was one of those kids, the ones at the top of the class; why'd she need extra credit? "Okay kids, you're going to be doing a project," Kori glance back at Mr. Coilton, who had paused to adjust his glasses, "Together."
"What?" the boy cut off his teacher, much to Mr. Coilton's annoyance, "I thought I was supposed to do whatever on my own?" The man's gaze grew cold, "You'd do well to take all the help you can get, Mr. Cooper." He took a few packets from behind his desk and brought one to Skylar, then gave the other one to Kori, who regarded it with little enthusiasm. "I'll give you two weeks. You'll have full access to the lab and any reference materials you need. Any questions?" Kori blinked at the paper, then looked to the girl. He gave a shrug. "Not from this end," he said with a smirk. Maybe this extra credit wouldn't suck too bad.

Sky had heard the teacher talk and she listened intently to make sure she knew thee guidelines for this assignment, and during it she noticed he gave a half hearted wave and she rolled her eyes, but that was when, she heard the words project and together in the same sentence. "What?" She asked, just about the same time Kori had. He was that kid who slacked out, and was only talented in basically one class, and definitely not chemistry. She scowled a bit, she didn't want to work with people, the whole point of having a project was to get away from them. She shot a small glare over to Kori. This was his fault for not being a better student. When the teacher asked about questions she flipped through the booklet looking for things that she may not know, but she was fairly confident she knew most things. "No, no questions she said."

"Good, good," the man said, already half-way on the path out the door, "I'll leave you to it then." He left the door wide open as he went, but the hallway was empty anyway. Kori followed Mr. Coilton's departure with his eyes until the man was most certainly gone, then he spun around in his seat to address Miss Blitz. He was all ready to get started on this project (yawn) when he realized..."Your eyebrows are really bushy,"

Skylar listened to the teacher as he spoke. Soon he was trying to make his way out the door and she just stayed silent as he tried to leave. She sat there for a bit and was reading through the instructions of the project to make sure she knew what she was doing, because they both know he doesn't seem like the type to be good in this class. That's when she heard his voice and soon it registered in her head. Because it registered in her head, she had to whip her head around to look at him. Her eyes narrowed a bit and then she retorted, "At least I don't look like a young preteen hippie." She said rolling her eyes, if he wanted to roll with insults then so be it, insults meant they wouldn't get close as friends, and they wouldn't have to share things like secrets and crap, which suited her just fine.

Kori didn't seem phased by the comment. "Preteen Hippie? That's a new one... guess I deserved that," he looked away for a second, which caused him to catch sight of something in the back of the room. "Do all air vents have those streamer things under-" He cut off, remembering why he was there, "Right, right, project." Kori turned back in his seat to look at his own copy of the instructions, then back to the girl, holding his tongue as a few thoughts came to mind. "So, uh, did you want to start then?" He asked, reading a few bits about chemical reactions and NaCl or something.

Sky looked at the boy, and she ignored him as he spoke a bit, he was rather annoying for the moment being. She was going through the project still making she she understood completely. Eventually though he said something that was a bit off topic and she raised an eyebrow up at him. "You're weird." She said calmly to him and then sighed as he asked the last thing. "We could start, by the looks of it we have to do multiple chemical reactions, and a few of them have to sit over a period of days. So we should get those ones started first." She said and she got out of her seat and she found safety goggles and grabbed one for her and one for him. "Unless you want to get chemicals in your eyes."

Not as weird as your eyebrows Kori thought with a smirk. She handed him a pair of goggles, so he put them on. "I may be an idiot, but I'm not stupid," he said with a laugh. He got to his feet, adjusting the goggles. "Sooo... where to start?"

Skylar looked at him, and she saw the smirk on his face and she scowled. Boys were stupid. That's all she'd be able to think about. "Never know, you are here against your will." She said shrugging and then she looked at him and had a small chuckle form. "I need a graduated cylinder and a cork that'll go in it if possible." Sky said as she went to the back table where all the chemicals were, and she grabbed the two chemicals that she needed. "Also to note, there's going to be a graph we have to make later on a big sheet of paper. But that's something to save for the end when we get all our data."

Kori ignored that comment. He knew what everyone thought of him, and he knew no one would be convinced easily. "On it!" he said, getting off and heading for the supply closet. Wow, how did they keep that handle so shiny? Must be tough-Wait. Cylinder and cork, cylinder and cork, he reminded himself, opening the closet and ignoring the things he really wanted to tinker with.
"Uh... can we stick to one thing at a time?" he had the stuff she'd asked for in his hands, but he wasn't sure if she wanted it set down right there or not. Kori knew he'd forget by the time they needed that paper, so hopefully Skylar would take it one step at a time.

Skylar had heard what he said about one thing at a time, and she assumed some people weren't able to be on top of things and remember as well as she could. She sighed for a bit and then saw him with the stuff she asked for and she smiled, "You can set those on the table and then I just need a test tube and one of those droppers and we should be good, I'll help you in a minute." Skylar said as she went to go look for a tray that held the test tubes and she brought it over. They had to do at least four combinations. Skylar now waited for. "Oh yea, did I mention this is like a week long lab or something?" She asked.

"Oki Doki," Kori sat down the stuff where she asked, then turned to find what she'd just said she needed. He was starting to feel a bit useful, finally, but then Skylar opened her mouth again. "Well...now you have." The boy looked suddenly depressed. Naturally, of course, given the fact that this was one long-ass experiment. How was he going to care about something so boring for so long?

Skylar heard the boy as he began getting the things that they needed, once she got the potion she wanted, she grabbed three more test tubes and she set each of them up into the tray that held them. 'Well to be fair we do get to blow things up, if we do some parts of the other experiments right." She said smirking as she began go get two other chemicals and she set them on the table. She opened the one and then used the dropper to take some and put a bit into the one vial. "You could grab a dropper too and put some of the chemical solution into the tubes. you can do these two." She said and pushed them closer to him. "Just to not get any on your hands or inhale too much. Chemical burns are the greatest to endure."

Kori looked a bit confused as she mentioned explosions. "Sounds dangerous... sure you guys aren't just trying to eliminate me from the gene pool?" Sure, he was excited for chemical reactions, but he'd rather work with a robo. "Uh...okay?" Chemistry stuff was being forced into his face, so he took it and tried to listen to Skylar. "Like this?" he asked as he made an attempt, blatantly disregarding the girl's warning. Thankfully, he didn't get hurt; at least not yet.

Time went by a bit but soon as she was looking over some of the chemical reactions after they had put them together she picked each up one by one, and shook them a bit careful not to spill the contents and get the reaction going. As she got to the last one though, something was going horribly wrong, the reaction time was going much faster and it was heating up and fizzing. "It's about to blo-!" She started shouting out as she tried to throw it away from them but soon enough it exploded which knocked both of them off their feet, Skylar got the brute of the force ad she hit her head on the table before she hit the floor. Luckily not knocked up but now she had a pounding headache and there was no doubt they'd both get chemical burns soon, but that was when smoke alarms were detected by the explosion and the few sprinklers in the room came on, so hopefully it'd take most of the damage away. "You okay over there?" She groaned not bothering to move from the floor yet.
