| "Welcome welcome, to the annual thirty-second hunger games!" a voice boomed over the pa into the crowd. "We select a couragous young man, and woman from each district to play in the hunger games!" She said peppy like and then showed a video about the history and background of the games. "Now, ladies first.." She put her hand into the glass bowl and pulled out a name. "Grace Newton," Then she went over to the men's bowl and put her hand in and dug out a name. "Jason Owens" "Grace Newton and Jason Owens are your tributes for the thirty second hunger games!" | |

| Jason "Jay" OwensJason looked around, somewhat hoping there was someone else with his name. He was poor and hungry, but he didn't want to be dead, that seemed slightly worse. Accepting this fate though, he stepped out and walked slowly to the stage, trying to keep himself from looking nervous. He got up to the stage and looked out over the crowd, he saw his parents, who didn't care at all that he was up there, to them he was just another random kid in the District now. His siblings were in their spots, and he could tell they were worried, at least. He would miss them.

Grace Newton Grace's eyes where wide in panic when she saw the time on the checking out clock. Her shift had run over two hours and she was supposed to be at the Justice Building where they would be calling out who would be sent to die at the next Hunger Games. There was no time to go home now, the capital had stolen two hours of what was supposed to be a holiday! Not that there was many holidays in District 5 to lose. There was nothing for it but to run, this at least she could do as her boots thumped against the road she felt for a moment that if she just kept on running she could run away from the voice of the host, away from District 5 and Param and everything else. Two blocks from the square she had to stop, coughing she held her side as she pushed her way though the mingling crowd looking for her stepfather and son as the video played the short but brutal history of the games that had all but taken the life of every tribute from District 5.
Already people where staring and muttering as she found Gustav holding Heike, he was red faced and sick but there was nothing she could do for him today, she didn't even have time to hold him in her arms before a peacekeeper came forward to escort her though signing in and roughly she was shoved into the section where the girls stood awaiting their fate. Once she had been just like them standing in her best dress and hoping like all hope that someone else would be called forward. Now she just put her hands in her pockets and waited trying not to notice the sick feeling in her stomach as she thought about how many slips of paper had her name. Last year had been bad enough, she had been convinced that her name would be called and glancing around the crowd she found Gustav down the back speaking with the men taking bets, this had been their plan.. to bet half their small savings that her name would be drawn. Either way they would lose.. she would be chosen or they would lose the small amount of money she had put aside to take Heike to the clinic. Either way Gustav had promised to take care of her son, a promise that was made more real as the name Grace Newton was called out over the speakers.
Well at least they would be able to afford the medicine for Heike now. Grace felt like the most horrible person imaginable as she thought of how she had wished to run away and leave Gustav and her baby. It seemed the odds had listened to her plea as she snapped to attention as her name was read again. People where backing away from her and she knew there would be no volunteers, for a moment she thought of running away but there was peacekeepers behind her and nowhere to go but forward. Slowly she put one foot in front of the other and walked forward, taking the stage her only comfort was knowing that all eyes would be glued to her dirty face and overalls. The boy tribute didn't look much better then herself, hungry, poor and wanting to be anywhere else. Grace tried to recall his name but it was just a fuzz, instead she looked out to the crowd searching for Gustav and hoping beyond hope that he would keep their promise. Now more then ever she was on her own. |
